Custom Indy Figures – Captain Blumburtt in dress uniform

Hello world! A little serendipity has allowed me to create this custom Indy figure.

#69 – Captain Blumburtt in dress uniform from “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”

Blumburtt_dressIn 1935, Captain Blumburtt led his men from the 11th Poona Rifles on a routine inspection tour of Pankot Province. Arriving at Pankot Palace, Blumburtt was invited to the royal dinner, which was also attended by Indiana Jones, Short Round and Willie Scott. Fortunately, Blumburtt apparently carried around his dress uniform whenever he went on his inspection tours, so he was able to wear his dress uniform and look respectable at the dinner, befitting his stature as the representative of the British Empire. Same as Indy, Blumburtt showed little disgust at the sumptuous dishes served, save for some annoyance at a live eel which emerged from the “Snake Surprise” and slithered too close for comfort.

Head – Dragonsky (G.I. Joe)
Torso, arms, waist – Cloud City Wing Guard (“Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back”)
Hands –  Mutt Williams with sword (KOTCS)
Legs – Any of the Indiana Jones

I had previously created a figure of Captain Blumburtt in his army uniform, and it was recently I had the idea to likewise create a dress uniform Blumburtt. I then realised that design of the torso and arms of the Cloud City Wing Guard perfectly matched Blumburtt’s dress uniform. As I already had those parts as spare custom fodder, I decided to proceed with the custom. The most challenging part of the custom work involved transplanting Indy’s legs over to the new waist. Usually, the legs together with waist are transplanted to a new figure as a whole.  But in this case I couldn’t make the torso match up with Indy’s waist properly, so I decided to remove Indy’s legs from the waist and directly transplant them over to the new waist, which was an almost impossible task! It involved boiling the legs to soften the pegs, and using a screwdriver to literally dig out the pegs from the waist without breaking them or deforming them too much, and then stuffing the pegs into the new waist before they cooled and harden.

Other work involved transplanting Mutt’s hands over, using epoxy to sculpt the collars and shoulder ranks, and painting the figure. Glossy red was used to paint the dress jacket when I realised that flat red would have looked too dull. A little bit of yellow was added to the gold paint to make it look shinier. The medals were designed on computer, printed out and pasted on. The figure shares the same Blumburtt head which I had created for the previous Blumburtt figure.
